Liver Cancer

Liver cancer that originates in the liver tissue is called hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). If it arises in the bile ducts, it is known as cholangiocarcinoma.

The most commonly performed procedure to cure primary liver cancer is surgery to remove the cancerous tissue. Unfortunately, by the time it is diagnosed, most liver cancers are too advanced or too difficult to target for curative surgery. Because of this, the main treatment for liver cancer around the world is to ablate the tumor or otherwise treat patients who are not surgical candidates.

Metastatic disease and cirrhosis can lead to liver cancer. Risk factors include:

  • Hepatitis virus (HBV or HCV)
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Fatty liver disease
  • Liver injury from medications
  • Hereditary diseases such as hemochromatosis
  • Primary sclerosing cholangitis
  • Primary biliary cirrhosis

South Florida Vascular Associates offers the most effective minimally invasive liver treatments, such as:

  • Percutaneous ablation
  • Chemoembolization
  • Radioembolization
