Metastatic and Benign Bone Disease

The skeletal system is one of the most common targets of metastatic cancer, or cancer that has spread from somewhere else. The presence of cancer in the bone can cause significant pain, primarily due to fractures caused by weakened bone structure. Aggressive tumors in the bone can cause significant morbidity and lead to immobility and significant reduction in the quality of life of cancer patients.

Both metastatic and benign bone disease (e.g., osteoporosis) can lead to compression fractures in the spine and pelvis. Compression fractures are a major cause of pain and suffering in the elderly patient population. Prompt evaluation and treatment by an interventional radiologist can immediately improve the pain caused by these fractures.

Risk factors for compression fractures include:

  • Breast, lung, prostate, or kidney cancer
  • Multiple myeloma
  • Osteoporosis
  • Minor trauma
  • Certain medications

Metastatic and benign bone disease treatment options include chemotherapy, focused external radiation, and minimally invasive radiation therapy. The best treatment for each patient is decided by a discussion between a medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, and interventional radiologist.

Minimally invasive treatment options can stabilize the bone to prevent pain and future progression of fractures. We offer percutaneous ablation, kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty as outpatient procedures at South Florida Vascular Associates.
