Varicocele

What Is Varicocele?

A varicocele (VAR-ih-koe-seel) is an enlargement of the veins within the loose bag of skin that holds your testicles (scrotum), not unlike varicose veins you see in the legs. Veins throughout the body carry blood from various organs back to the heart. Normally, they have valves that ensure the blood moves in the proper direction. However, when valves in the testicular vein don’t work properly, gravity can make blood collect in the scrotum, causing a varicocele.

An enlarged prostate or BPH can cause problems with urination.

At SFVA, we treat more than one medical condition experienced by men. Do you have an enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)? If you’re suffering from bothersome symptoms such as difficulty starting a urination stream, dribbling at the end of urination, or going frequently at night, Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE) might be the solution you need. With no incisions, no hospital stays, and only a 1-week recovery, PAE shrinks the prostate within a few weeks. Our staff includes one of the only vascular interventional radiologists who will treat this condition. Call us today to make an appointment.

Embolization is a modern, less invasive way to treat Varicocele, and can get you back on your feet in less time.

Varicocele embolization is an outpatient procedure that is performed without general anesthesia using “twilight’ sedation. ln this procedure, a small tube is inserted in the groin or a vein in the neck through a small nick in the skin (about the size of the lead in a pencil). The skin is numbed for this procedure and it is not painfuI. Next, a small catheter or tube, is painlessly guided into the abdomen and into the varicocele vein under the guidance of x-ray imaging. The vein is then closed off.
