What is EVLT?
EVLT stands for endovenous laser treatment. This groundbreaking procedure is known as the newest generation in venous insufficiency treatment. Traditional vein stripping can be very painful and tedious, and many patients prefer avoiding it. EVLT uses a very thin laser fiber that can be inserted through a minimally invasive opening in the skin. Inside the vein, the fiber emits heat and causes the affected vein to close. The body will then reroute blood flow through other, healthier veins.
EVLT is incredibly effective and can be performed in less than an hour. Many patients see immediate relief with this option and experience far fewer complications than traditional surgery. At South Florida Vascular Associates, we offer this state-of-the-art, outpatient procedure in our spa-like surgical setting. We also offer the following options for venous insufficiency which are easily combined with EVLT for more complete treatment.
Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment that uses a sclerosing agent to close weakened veins. A sclerosing agent is a chemical irritant that causes inflammation in the vein when injected. Sclerotherapy has been in use for many decades and has a very safe and effective history. It has benefits over EVLT in that it can also treat smaller “feeder veins” with a single treatment. It may be the best option for very small veins such as spider veins.
Phlebectomy
Ambulatory phlebectomy is a micro-surgical procedure. It involves removing the affected veins through a very tiny incision in the skin (less than 2-4mm) using a special instrument. It’s often used to treat varicose veins that are not caused by saphenous vein reflux.

BOOK APPOINTMENTWho is a Candidate for EVLT?
EVLT is a versatile technology that can be used for varicose veins and many different types of venous insufficiency. It’s safe and effective for most patients, but a vascular surgeon will determine if EVLT is the best option for your needs. For example, veins that are too small for EVLT or the presence of a deeper vascular concern may necessitate exploring other treatments.
The EVLT Procedure
EVLT is performed using only a local anesthetic at our comfortable, state-of-the-art treatment suite. Your vascular surgeon will insert a tiny catheter through an opening in the skin, using ultrasound guidance to locate the appropriate veins. The catheter contains a very thin laser fiber that emits heat energy, irritating the inside of the vein and causing it to permanently close. After your treatment, you can return home with minimal restrictions on your activity.
