What is Gonadal Vein Embolization?
South Florida Vascular Associates performs gonadal vein embolization for women with pelvic congestion syndrome (varicose veins in the pelvic area) and men with varicoceles (varicose veins in the scrotum).
Women living with pelvic congestion syndrome can experience chronic pain that is not related to menstruation or pregnancy. This condition involves problems with blood flow in the pelvic veins; blood may flow backward causing the veins to twist and swell. Men living with varicoceles can experience pain, swelling, and infertility.
This minimally invasive treatment is a catheter-based technique used to treat abnormal vessels or veins.
Who is a Candidate for Gonadal Vein Embolization?
Women living with pelvic congestion syndrome or men with varicoceles can often benefit from gonadal vein embolization. To learn if this treatment is right for you, a consultation with your physician is required to discuss your medical history, symptoms, and more.
The Gonadal Vein Embolization Procedure
The gonadal vein embolization procedure is performed under local anesthesia or mild sedation. To start, your interventional radiologist will thread a catheter from the femoral vein or the jugular vein in the neck into the faulty varicose veins.
Next, the doctor will insert one or more coils along with a sclerosing agent which clots the blood and seals off faulty veins through the catheter. The sclerosing agent also travels into the tiny secondary branches of the blood vessels to close them off (these vessels typically cause recurrences with surgical ligation).
When you stand up, the vein will be closed, and blood no longer fills the varicose veins in the pelvic area or scrotum. Any pain from these veins will be resolved. For many men, their sperm count and motility also improve.
