About Palm Beach, FL
Palm Beach is a town in southern Florida, but it is separated from the mainland by the Lake Worth Lagoon. It has a population of around 9,500 residents and a median income of approximately $170,000. It’s known for its high-end estates and its many beaches, including the Palm Beach Municipal Beach, Midtown Beach, and Phipps Ocean Park. The town is also home to Worth Avenue, a street filled with upscale boutiques, restaurants, and art galleries. Palm Beach is also where you can find the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum, Cox Science Center and Aquarium, and Norton Museum of Art.
What is Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE)?
Genicular artery embolization (GAE) is a minimally-invasive procedure that reduces blood flow to the lining of the knee to provide immediate and long-term pain relief. By blocking specific arteries around the knee, the procedure can reduce inflammation and treat chronic knee pain and osteoarthritis.
During the procedure, your specialist will guide a catheter through the artery in the groin area. They typically use an X-ray to ensure the catheter goes to the right place. It will be led to the knee’s genicular arteries. From there, tiny particles are injected into the arteries to decrease blood flow in the inflamed areas. The treatment is performed under moderate sedation and is considered an outpatient procedure, so you will be able to go home the same day. The procedure typically takes 1-2 hours.
Who is a Candidate for the GAE Procedure for Knee Osteoarthritis Pain?
Most patients who have struggled with chronic knee pain and osteoarthritis and haven’t seen results from physical therapy, knee injections, and pain relievers are usually good candidates for GAE. However, there are some specific criteria we look for at South Florida Vascular Associates to help determine if this is the right treatment for you.
Ideal Candidates for GAE in Palm Beach Are:
- In good overall health
- Over the age of 40
- Have moderate to severe knee pain
- Have localized knee pain
- Looking to avoid or delay knee replacement surgery
GAE Benefits
You can look forward to a wide range of benefits with GAE in Palm Beach, including the following:
- Quick recovery: Recovery is relatively quick with GAE. Most patients can return to normal, light activities within a few days to a week. That’s much quicker than knee replacement surgery.
- Pain relief: Many patients notice less pain within the first couple of days of treatment, but it can take up to a few months to see significant results.
- Outpatient procedure: As this is an outpatient procedure, you don’t have to worry about staying in a hospital overnight. You can go home right after treatment.
- Lasting results: You can expect pain relief for up to two years, if not longer.
