What is Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE)?
Genicular artery embolization (GAE) is also referred to as embolization of the knee and is a minimally-invasive procedure designed to provide long-term relief from knee pain due to osteoarthritis. But how does it work? By reducing the amount of blood flow to the lining of the knee, it can reduce inflammation in the area and reduce pain.
The procedure is typically done under local anesthesia or twilight sedation. A catheter is inserted through an artery in the top of your thigh or near the groin area. Using an X-ray, your specialist will guide the catheter to the arteries supplying blood to the lining of the knee. From there, tiny particles will be injected into the catheter. These particles are what will reduce the blood flow and, in turn, reduce the inflammation and pain. The whole procedure typically takes 1-2 hours.
Who is a Candidate for the GAE Procedure for Knee Arthritis?
Most patients who are struggling with moderate to severe knee pain related to osteoarthritis and who haven’t seen results from other more conservative treatments (like pain medications, physical therapy, and injections) are good candidates for GAE. That said, there are guidelines we follow to determine if this is the right procedure for your unique needs.
Ideal Candidates for GAE in West Palm Beach Are:
- Over the age of 40
- In good overall health
- Have realistic expectations of treatment
- Struggling with localized chronic knee pain
- Want to avoid knee replacement surgery
- Nonsmokers
